General Planting Recommendations:
- Soil Preparation:
- Conduct soil tests to determine nutrient requirements.
- Plow and harrow the land to achieve a fine tilth suitable for maize cultivation.
- Planting Density:
- Maintain a spacing of 75cm between rows and 25cm between plants within a row, aiming for a population of 53,333 plants per hectare.
- Fertilization:
- Basal Application: Apply NPK 15-15-15 at a rate of 400 kg/ha at planting.
- Top Dressing: Apply Urea at a rate of 200 kg/ha when plants are knee-high (approximately 4 weeks after planting).
- Weed Management:
- Implement timely weeding, either manually or using appropriate herbicides, to reduce competition for nutrients and light.
- Pest and Disease Control:
- Monitor the crop regularly for signs of pests and diseases.
- Apply recommended pesticides as needed, following integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
- Harvesting:
- Harvest when grains reach physiological maturity and moisture content drops to around 20–25%.
- Proper drying post-harvest is essential to reduce moisture content to safe storage levels (13-14%).
