Planting Time: Sow after the last frost when soil temperatures have warmed to at least 15°C (60°F). Corn is a warm-season crop.
Planting Method:
- Sow directly into the garden soil. Corn does not transplant well.
- Spacing: Plant seeds 2.5-4 cm (1-1.5 inches) deep.
- Layout: Plant in blocks, not single rows. This is crucial for proper wind pollination. A block should be at least 4 rows wide.
- Row Spacing: 30-40 cm (12-16 inches) apart.
- Plant Spacing: 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) apart within the row.
Isolation Requirement: CRITICAL FOR SWEET CORN.
- To maintain its sweet flavor, it must be isolated from other types of corn (especially field corn or popcorn) and from different sugar-type sweet corns (like standard sugary (su) types) by at least 250 meters, or by planting so that their tasseling times are at least 14 days apart. Otherwise, cross-pollination will cause starchy, tough kernels.
Care:
- Watering: Consistent moisture is vital, especially during tasseling, silking, and ear development.
- Fertilization: It is a heavy feeder. Use a balanced fertilizer or one higher in Nitrogen at planting, and side-dress with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer when plants are about knee-high.
