Piperazine dihydrochloride is a water-soluble hygroscopic alkaline chemical. and also an anthelmintic that can be used in food or drinking water.
Piperazine is a selective agonist of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors that causes chloride channels to open and the membrane of nematode parasite muscle cells to hyperpolarize.
The hyperpolarization causes nerve membranes at the neuromuscular junction to obstruct, resulting in nematode paralysis, which is then excreted with the faeces.
